K-12 Education in the Philippines: Views and Points of Filipino Teachers and Critics

If truth be told, the Philippines is far behind from its neighboring countries when it comes to proficiency in major subjects like math and science as shown in its performance during international assessments. More likely because it is the only country which has no more than 10 years of basic education, the span may fall short to prepare students to qualify for tertiary level. In response, the Aquino administration spearheaded the K+12 then eventually changed to K-12 scheme to be applied to the existing educational system of the country. In fairness to the new administration and the Department of Education with their brisk effort to turn the program to reality but, is it adequate?

Just recently, news broke that the lately engineered K-12 is quite unfeasible and might not be in full effect before long. Contrary to Department of Education’s assertion that by this year, changes in the curriculum will be discerned in most public schools as well as private institutions. Going back, why then that most educators and professors from different universities are still in doubt that the said program is still not good to go? Is K-12 then possible?

                Many critics are still bothered that K-12 might be more disastrous than helpful if the transition is not velvety. As sighted by one of the professors from the University of the Philippines-Diliman, integrating K-12 to the educational system is like overhauling the whole system and it obviously require generous time to bring about. Ironically, DepEd keeps reassuring that the time is ample and they will do it gradually. Then if it is true, why was it that most if not all of the kindergarten teachers who underwent the 2-day training for the new kindergarten curriculum have lots of uncertainties in understanding it? In essence, the teachers are the ones who will transmit the program to the students but if they are less capable and less qualified then it may turn ineffectual and waste of time.

                Right now, more or less 140,000 grade 1 and 7 public school teachers all over the country are set to go through series of training this May to be acquainted with the new learning competencies suited for the new grade levels. Meanwhile, grades 1 and 7 this year will be the dummy of the K-12 curriculum and in addition, grade 7 or the turning first year high school students will be the first batch to go through grades 11 and 12 in the school year 2016-2018. Considering all of these, it might be convincingly gradual but with a poor and highly politicized country like the Philippines, frictions are along the way to impede its success.

                Mr. Benjamin Valbuena, the president of Manila Public School Teachers Association said in an interview that it is similar with a premature birth whereas the tendency is for the baby to be deformed and abnormal. Whether or not he has the point, we have to think that we are talking about a crucial issue and it is education.  The intention is good but such huge step necessitates massive planning and preparation.

i just want to ask this question, hope you will answer..what will happen to students who didn't undergo the senior high school in k to 12, students who graduated in the old curriculum in ched the not k to 12 curriculum, what will happen to them in college say they will study another course after graduating a course for example BSA then they will study again BSIT.what will happen to them if by that time they will enter another course their course (BSIT for ex.) will be 3 years only which means that only the major subjects will be study because the minor subjects are studied in the senior high school.what if they didn't undergo the k to 12 program,will they be admitted to college quickly or they will first take the senior high school subjets which are pre-requisite to college?
